In her PhD thesis, Trine Wilkens explores the effects of alcohol consumption on cardiovascular health. Her research suggests that moderate alcohol intake—approximately one drink per day for women and up to two for men—may be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease. These potential benefits appear to be particularly relevant for the elderly population.
Moderate alcohol consumption is linked to increased levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein), often referred to as “good cholesterol.” HDL plays an important role in maintaining heart health by transporting excess cholesterol to the liver, where it can be broken down and removed or recycled.
The study is supported by customized scientific illustrations, which help visualize and simplify the complex biological processes involved.
