Alcohol consumption, lipoprotein, and cardiovascular disease

In her Phd thesis, Trine Wilkens investigates the impact of alcohol cosumption on cardiovascular disease. When we drink alcohol in moderation of 1 for women to a couple of drinks for men per day, it seems to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diceases like stroke and heart diseases, and it is especially beneficial for the elderly population.

A moderate intake of alchol leads to increased HDL – the good cholesterol, who are the managers for a healthy heart, by transporting the fat colesterol to the liver which will remove or recycle it. The costumized scientific figures help to visualise and comprehend the complexity of microbiology.

Lipoproteins are particles consiting of protein and lipids (fat). They transport cholesterol through our blod to the cells of the body.

We have two systems of lipoproteins – the good and the bad. The ‘good’ cholesterol are HDL (high-density lipoproteins). And the ‘bad’ cholesterol – LDL (low-density lipoprotein).
